Thomas Bernhard. Autrichien. Né en 1931, il meurt en 1989. Il a fait des études de violon et de chant, interrompues, dans sa jeunesse, par la tuberculose. Il fut musicologue, acteur, chroniqueur judiciaire, poète. Et, à partir de l'âge de trente ans, avec une ferveur exclusive, romancier et dramaturge. Son écriture est à la fois monomaniaque et vagabonde, globalement destructrice et passionnée de détails. Ce n'est jamais fini. Il y a toujours pire. On peut sans fin ajouter un élément nouveau à cette vision du cauchemar, à cette dynamique du désastre. C'est par cette coopération active avec le malheur que la littérature de Thomas Bernhard, loin d'être un constat mélancolique, est une lutte incessante aux effets revigorants. D'un livre à l'autre, de Gel à Extinction, ce même monologue se poursuit, tendu sur l'espace d'une bizarre jubilation et d'une infatigable révolte. Thomas Bernhard, le briseur de silence est la réédition, mise à jour et augmentée, du volume paru en 1990 dans la collection " Les Contemporains ".
